Training Abs (Part II of III)

In Training Abs Part I we looked at the most common exercises that are used to strengthen the body, recruit a lot of muscle, and increase metabolism long enough post-exercise to create a energy deficit and allow the abs to show.

Today we're going to look at some simple exercises and variations that actually target the core musculature and have an impact on 'tightening' while strengthening the muscles you need to work and to show.
3) But REALLY, what are the best exercises that WORK my abs?

Simplest first:
  • forward plank:
  • side plank:
  • glute/hip ext:

Intermediate:
  • forward rocking plank
  • side plank with hip abduction
  • single leg glute/hip ext

Advanced:
  • bodysaw (on foam roller or on hardwood, vinyl or tiled floor)
  • starfish side plank
  • Knee to chest glute/hip extension

4) Okay tough guy, I mastered those exercises after like, 1 week.  That's it?  That's all you got?  Those exercises are so boring!  What about band exercises?  Kettleballs?  Is that what they're called?

Beginner
  • 1/2 get up
  • kneeling walkout
  • side plank with a cable row
Intermediate:
  • windmill (single, high or low carry, or double)
  • kneeling ab wheel
  • forward plank lat pulldown
Advanced:
  • Turkish get up (single or double)
  • standing ab wheel
  • slideboard walkouts
In case these are all UNfamiliar to you, look forward to the links for the exercises in the next few days.  Posting 18 videos on my blog would be a disaster, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to upload them from my flip to youtube and then to the blog.  Of course, if you know how to help, please share!
